Indeed, a map of Italy capable of reaching such heights of refinement and elegance has never been printed. The map we offer on this page is a development based on a representation of Italy published four years earlier by Molini, to which roads and post offices have been added. This map of Italy, as the title states, was printed from the design of the famous geographer Giovanni Antonio Bartolomeo Rizzi Zannoni, who throughout his career placed his science at the service of the greatest European enterprises. The cartographic design used is the famous Cassini design, which took Paris as the starting point of the meridian. The orography is rendered in perspective with grazing light shading. There are eight drawing scales in the ancient units of measurement used in Italy, France, Germany, and the various Italian states. Of particular value is the cartouche in the bottom right, which gives the design a pleasing artistic appearance.

Antonio Rizzi Zannoni’s is an important map of Italy, starting with its dimensions: it is a finely drawn canvas measuring 100 x 130 cm. Everything was created using the same technique as Molini, and therefore through the use of a manual press equipped with carefully engraved plates. As one can imagine, these reproductions themselves are unique collector's items: given the particular printing method, in fact, no two copies are the same. The paper, 100% pure cotton and of excellent weight, has been treated with special vegetable substances to allow for an aging process equal to that of the original. Starting from their discoveries, prolific cartographic workshops developed progressively in Europe, ready to continuously create new maps or update old ones based on the most recent information. Some coasts had not yet been explored, many islands had not yet been identified, and sometimes the shapes traced by these scholars proved rather imprecise. However, the instruments and measurement systems were absolutely rudimentary compared to those we have today, and starting from these premises, the quality of works like this Nova Orbis Tabula cannot help but amaze us. This is an antique canvas created at the end of the 17th century by the illustrious French cartographer Hubert Jaillot. Cassini – 1788

The graphic representation of the Earth's shape dates back many centuries, despite man's scarce geographical knowledge, limited mastery of mathematical and geometric equations, and the lack of accurate measuring instruments. All these factors made it extremely difficult even to attempt to create cartographic representations. The first sketches arose from the concrete need to know and precede the use of writing: they are schematic representations of clear planimetric details, suitable for finding an already known route. Similar tools, proportionate to the limited needs and constraints in which primitive peoples lived, slowly gave way to increasingly expressive descriptions and, with the expansion of horizons along with man's knowledge and needs, the development of more stable means of measurement and representation became indispensable. From small, delimited areas to the representation of vast territories, up to the global depiction of the entire Earth's surface. The irrational and primitive cartography of the Middle Ages was surpassed by the spread of Ptolemy's Geography, favored by the invention of the printing press (1446).

While analyzing and describing the parts of the Earth known at the time, this work also defines its general foundation and the system for logically expanding the representation of the Earth, thanks to the most recent geographical discoveries. By the end of the 15th century, the concept of the world's sphericity was well accepted by the most important figures of the time, in addition to having been demonstrated by the great sea voyages that took place after the discovery of the Americas.

More precise geographical corollaries and research into more efficient instrumental means were then developed. But it was only in the 18th century that the shape of the Earth was truly defined. After perfecting measuring instruments and obtaining an international organization of specialized studies and geodetic measurements, the creation of large national maps and cartographic representations based on the world known at the time was achieved. The world map represented here is the work of the geographer G. Cassini and is undoubtedly an important piece for the varied and updated information resulting from the voyages and discoveries made by the famous English explorer James Cook (1728-1779).

This important figure made three long voyages. In the first (1768-1771), he crossed the Pacific Ocean, discovering the Society Islands, New Zealand, and the eastern coast of Australia, ascertaining its separation, contrary to what was previously believed. The second voyage took him toward the South Pole in search of the southernmost continent. Unfortunately, he was forced to stop due to ice and snowstorms at a latitude of 71° 10'. He then sailed north to Easter Island and the Marquesas Islands, exploring the Society Islands, the Loyalty Islands, the New Hebrides, and New Caledonia. He returned to New Zealand and sailed between the 54th and 55th parallels, heading first toward Cape Horn and then toward the Cape of Good Hope, without finding large extensions of land along the line bounded by the ice. In his third voyage, he searched for the passage leading to the northern part of America. He reached the Bering Strait in the Pacific and along the way discovered the Sandwich Islands. He followed the American coast from the 45th parallel up to Alaska. He arrived beyond the strait to the latitude of 70° 44', where masses of ice prevented him from proceeding. He returned to the Sandwich Islands to spend the winter, but was killed there by a native.

In the footsteps of James Cook with an 18th-century world map

The technique used to create this map is the same used by ancient cartographers: manual printing press, finely engraved plates, and 100% cotton paper. Mounting on cotton canvas reflects the production process often used in the past, because with this method, cartographic representations were better preserved and were also easier to transport. Naturally, the aging process alone, obtained with natural substances, was not used by ancient cartographers for obvious reasons. The watercolor effect gives the subject a polychrome image of undoubted visual impact. St. Peter's, the Mouth of Truth, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Colosseum: a true spectacle for the eyes, which reflects the painter's engagement with the immersive richness of Roman architecture.

A faithful artistic reproduction of the perspective view of Rome

The fine and elegant drawing, the attention to detail, the name of the city written as if on parchment paper, a rich legend: all these elements openly declare the authorship of this work, the result of the winning combination between Probst and Werner. And without detracting from the prestige of this collector's item, this reproduction is printed on 100% cotton paper, then treated with vegetable substances to age it. The print was created using an antique manual press, just as the Probsts did in Augsburg, equipped with plates finely engraved by skilled artisans in the field. Naturally, collectors are spoiled for choice among the many perspective views of Rome. Undeniably, this particular edition by the Probsts represents one of the highest peaks in this discipline.

*** Our canvases are printed with a manual press and are produced only upon request. M. Cassini 1800

Ancient Italy by G. M. Cassini - 1800

The graphic representation of the Earth's shape dates back many centuries, despite mankind’s scarce geographical knowledge, limited mastery of mathematical and geometric equations, and the lack of accurate measuring instruments. All these factors made even attempting to create cartographic representations extremely difficult. The first sketches arose from the concrete need to know and precede the use of writing: they are schematic representations of clear planimetric details, suitable for finding an already known itinerary. Similar tools, proportional to the limited needs and constraints in which primitive peoples lived, slowly gave way to increasingly expressive descriptions, and as horizons expanded along with human knowledge and needs, the development of more stable means of measurement and representation became indispensable. From small, delimited areas to the representation of vast territories, up to the global depiction of the entire Earth's surface. The irrational and primitive cartography of the Middle Ages was superseded by the spread of Ptolemy's Geography, favored by the invention of the printing press (1446).

While analyzing and describing the parts of the Earth known at the time, this work also defined its general foundation and the system for logically expanding the representation of the Earth, thanks to the most recent geographical discoveries. By the end of the 15th century, the concept of the Earth's sphericity was well accepted by the most important figures of the era, in addition to having been demonstrated by the great sea voyages that took place after the discovery of the Americas.

More precise geographical corollaries and research into more efficient instrumental means were therefore developed. But it was only in the 18th century that the shape of the Earth was truly defined. After perfecting measuring instruments and obtaining an international organization of specialized studies and geodetic measurements, the creation of large national maps and cartographic representations embraced the world known to man.

The small Italy proposed here is a valid example of this. Its first publication dates back to 1800 and it was printed in Rome at the Calcografia Camerale. The technique used to create this map is the same one employed by ancient cartographers: hand press, finely engraved plates, and pure cotton paper. The map is then mounted on cotton canvas, reflecting the manufacturing process frequently used in the past, as it was (and is) necessary to obtain the best possible preservation and guarantee easy shipping of the maps. Only the aging process is an operation our anonymous author would not have needed: it is carried out with a series of completely natural substances. Finally, the watercoloring gives the work a polychrome vision of undoubted scenic effect. All this work is carried out to produce an object capable of restoring the beauty and the historical and cultural value of the original, using the same materials and techniques of the past.

Please note: the canvases are delivered unframed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1023/0808/6137/files/Italia_Antica_-_G.M._Cassini_1800_01.webp?v=1790081161
