planisfero-jaillot
Jaillot World Map

Nova orbis tabula ad usum serenissimi Burgundiae ducis, Hubert Jaillot - 1694

The exploits of Columbus, Vespucci, Cabot, Magellan, and many other explorers, as is well known, gave a prodigious acceleration to geographical science. Starting from their discoveries, prolific cartographic workshops developed progressively in Europe, ready to continuously create new maps or update old ones based on the most recent information. Some coasts had not yet been explored, many islands had not yet been identified, and sometimes the shapes traced by these scholars proved rather imprecise. However, the instruments and measurement systems were absolutely rudimentary compared to those we have today, and starting from these premises, the quality of works like this Nova Orbis Tabula cannot help but amaze us. This is an antique canvas created at the end of the 17th century by the illustrious French cartographer Hubert Jaillot. Like much of Jaillot's cartographic production, this planisphere stands out not so much for the cartographic material itself—although advanced and detailed—as for the care put into the decoration that surrounds it.

A beautifully decorated 17th-century planisphere

The eye is immediately captured by the elegance of the upper and lower cartouches. After all, this was not just any planisphere: Jaillot dedicated it to the Duke of Burgundy, and it is likely to pay homage to this important figure that he designed the numerous allegorical figures that accompany this cartographic work so refinedly.

In order not to diminish this work in any way, the reproduction we offer on this page has been created using the same printing techniques used to produce the original. The design is in fact reproduced with the relief printing technique, and therefore with the aid of a manual press and plates finely engraved by true artists, even before craftsmen. It follows that, given the particular method followed, each product is absolutely unique, due to the many small and inevitable differences between one print and another.

*** Our canvases are printed with a manual press and are produced only upon request. It takes about 10 days for the Black and White version and about 20 days for the Hand-painted one.

Please note: the canvases are delivered unframed.
