veduta-di-napoli
View of Naples

Perspective view of Naples - Author: Probst

The perspective view of Naples, with Castel dell'Ovo on one side and the pier on the other, seems to want to envelop the observer. The first thing that strikes and captures the attention is the Mediterranean Sea lapping against the Neapolitan city, furrowed by splendid sailing ships. A little further on, where the waves calm down, the Naples of the eighteenth century rises majestically. It is a faithful perspective view, made distinctive by the typically German taste for accentuating and highlighting the city towers, almost as if to erect fascinating minarets among the various Neapolitan castles. Behind the city, at the height of Castel Sant'Elmo on the Vomero hill, one finds a gently unrolled parchment, which bears the Greek root from which Naples derives, specifically "Neapolis", new city. In the lower part, as regularly reported in Probst's views, a rich legend with 77 entries indicates the main points of interest.

The perspective view of Neapolis: the Neapolitan city seen by Probst

This perspective view of Naples is part of a large series of views of European cities created by the Bavarian publishers Probst during the eighteenth century, almost as if to compose an enormous and meticulous mosaic of the Old Continent. What fascinates the contemporary observer, in addition to the elegance and attention to detail of the drawing, is the particular method by which this canvas is made. The goal is to put into your hands a collector's item similar to the one that came out three hundred years ago from the Probst printing house in Augsburg. This print is made with an antique manual press, on a 100% cotton paper support, then mounted on a canvas of the same material. To complete the tactile and visual experience, the multi-sheet mounting facilitates the storage and transport of the paper itself.

*** Our canvases are printed with a manual press and are produced only upon request. It takes about 10 days for the Black and White version and about 20 days for the Hand-painted one.

Please note: the canvases are delivered unframed.
